Ho Chi Minh City will start work on a slew of necessary traffic infrastructure projects to meet residents’ travel demand from now until the end of this year.

On the construction site of Nhi Thien Duong 1 bridge

Of them is Vam Sat 2 bridge linking Ly Nhon commune up to the center of Can Gio district and downtown HCMC.

The project will contribute in meeting surging traffic demand in the area, facilitating seafood farming, exploiting tourist potentials and boosting socio-economic development in the commune and the island district.

Urban Traffic Management Board Zone 4 is preparing for a groundbreaking ceremony in the third quarter this year.

In the northwest gateway to the city, Urban Traffic Management Board Zone 3 will start building two works to improve urban planning and gradually develop the city traffic system as per plan in the same quarter.

The first project will expand To Ky street to improve traffic capacity and reduce flooding in the route and part of Dang Thuc Vinh street and build technical infrastructure works underground.

The second project is to upgrade Provincial Road 9 in Hoc Moon district to connect traffic from the center of the district to Rach Tra bridge and solve flooding.

In the eastern gateway, Urban Traffic Management Board Zone 2 has scheduled to build a VND250 billion (US$11 million) project to improve the eastern ring road, from My Thuy intersection to Rach Chiec bridge, and nearly VND300 billion Ba Cua bridge on the right side of the road in District 2 in July.

Other projects that will begin construction in the second and the third quarters this year comprise a road beneath Binh Trieu bridge with the investment capital of VND42.5 billion and a VND34.5 billion project to repair and expand Road No.1 in Truong Tho ward, Thu Duc district.

In addition, Tang Long bridge will be built in District 9 at the total cost of VND450 billion and Ong Nhieu bridge will be rebuilt in Nguyen Duy Trinh street District 9 with VND425 billion. Around VND26.5 billion will be spent on broadening Alley 115 of Road No.5 in Linh Xuan ward, Thu Duc to create an approach route to Motor Vehicle Registration Center 50-02S.

A VND495 billion project will be invested to build a bridge to Kim Cuong island, connecting Thanh My Loi residential area with Mai chi Tho street, and a 530 meter riverside road in District 2.

Speeding up construction progress

Besides building new projects, the city Department of Transport will speed up the progress of under construction works to open them to traffic this year.

They comprise Nhi Thien Duong 1 bridge in Tung Thien Vuong street, District 8.

The old bridge was built in 1925 and has been exploited for over 90 years, playing a significant role in connecting the center of the city with outskirts and adjacent provinces via Highway 50.

In January this year, work started on a project to repair and upgrade the bridge with the total funds of VND163.3 billion, expected to complete within a year. A leader of Zone 4 said that they were attempting to reduce construction time and open the bridge to traffic in September or October instead of January as scheduled.

The steel flyover above Nguyen Thai Son- Nguyen Kiem intersection, Go Vap district officially broke ground in March with the first item being the branch from Hoang Minh Giam to Nguyen Thai Son street.

The branch is scheduled to be built in July. Zone 3 said it was working to reduce the time by half a month.

The first phase of My Thuy intersection, District 2 began construction in June last year with the first item being Ky Ha bridge. Two main items building a bypass and tunnel were started in November, the same year.

According to contract, the project will be built in February next year. Leaders of Zone 2 said that they would strive for completing the project in November this year.
